CREF Workshops

CREF workshops offer experiential education, complementing PowerPoint presentations and small-group discussions, reinforcing concepts and helping participants improve knowledge, skills, and confidence — all in a safe and supportive learning environment. Registered CREF 2023 in-person attendees may attend all of the following hands-on CREF workshops at no extra cost:

  • Abbott: The Case for Simple and Efficient Initiation of Acute MCS Support
  • Abiomed: Treating Cardiogenic Shock in the Setting of High-Risk Surgery or VA ECMO
  • Biomed Simulation: "Escape Room" Competition
  • HemoSonics: PBM Wet Workshop: POC Assessment and Restoration of Hemostasis
  • Medtronic: Experience Transformative Innovation in ECMO, Cannula, and Autotransfusion
  • Spectrum: Superpac Workshop: Harnessing Intelligence and Simplicity
  • Terumo: Continuous In-Line Blood Parameter Monitoring Technology

The cost to attend each CREF workshop is included in the conference registration fee. Space is limited, and workshops are offered first come, first served. Registered attendees will receive detailed instructions about how to attend these CREF workshops.

Participants must be registered for the conference, and guest registrants are not eligible to participate.

CEU credits, but not CME credits, are offered for all CREF workshops.

View details below, and contact us if you have questions about any of the following CREF workshops.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13

1. The Case for Simple and Efficient Initiation of Acute MCS Support

WORKSHOP HOST: ABBOTT
MISSION HILLS | 3RD FLOOR, SOUTH TOWER
8:30 AM – 9:30 AM, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM, and 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Fewer Steps to Full Support! Join us for a hands-on wet workshop with the new CentriMag™ Pre-connected Pack. Experience its ease of set-up, efficient priming process and convenient initiation of full support in fewer steps than before. Participants will also have the opportunity to hear from and engage with the Abbott engineers that designed and developed the new CentriMag™ Pre-connected Pack.

2. "Escape Room" Competition

WORKSHOP HOST: BIOMED SIMULATION
CARDIFF | 3RD FLOOR, SOUTH TOWER
8:30 AM – 9:30 AM, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM, and 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Escape Games, also known as puzzle rooms, are gaming adventures where you have a limited amount of time to gather clues with your team and solve puzzles to escape the room.

In our version of an escape room, a 3 – 4 member team is in a room with a simulated patient requiring ECLS support. To “escape” the room the team works together to find clues and solve puzzles that will result in a stable patient on ECLS. The team has 30 minutes to complete this task.

Each player on the team with the shortest time will win a $100 Amazon Gift Card.

3. Experience Transformative Innovation in ECMO, Cannula, and Autotransfusion

WORKSHOP HOST: MEDTRONIC
MIRAMAR | 3RD FLOOR, SOUTH TOWER
8:30 AM – 9:30 AM, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM, and 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Join Medtronic and connect with your peers during a hands-on ECLS workshop featuringNautilus™* Smart ECMO Module, Crescent™* and Crescent™* RA jugular dual lumen catheters, and Bio-Medicus Life Support™ catheters. Additionally, come experience hands-on with the autoLog IQ™ autotransfusion system.

4. Treating Cardiogenic Shock in the Setting of High-Risk Surgery or VA ECMO

WORKSHOP HOST: ABIOMED
MISSION HILLS | 3RD FLOOR, SOUTH TOWER
2:15 PM – 3:15 PM, 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM, and 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Join us for a hands-on discussion on the implantation and management of Impella 5.5 surrounding cardiopulmonary bypass and VA ECMO.

5. Bleeding Management Wet Workshop: Optimal POC Assessment and Restoration of Hemostasis

WORKSHOP HOST: HEMOSONICS
CARDIFF | 3RD FLOOR, SOUTH TOWER
2:15 PM – 3:15 PM, 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM, and 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

This workshop will include a review of the various POC techniques, methodologies and practices for Hemostasis restoration and bleeding management. This session will include a talk from a prominent medical professional(s) in the field, a short section from industry and a hands-on demonstration portion to include whole blood testing.

6. Continuous In-Line Blood Parameter Monitoring Technology

WORKSHOP HOST: TERUMO CARDIOVASCULAR
MIRAMAR | 3RD FLOOR, SOUTH TOWER
2:15 PM – 3:15 PM, 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM, and 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

As surgical techniques and institutional protocols continue to evolve, continuous in-line blood parameter monitoring technology advances and adapts to meet important new patient monitoring variables.

Numerous peer reviewed articles support the claim that intra-operative monitoring during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery is a critical component of perfusion safety and improving patient outcomes. These studies have shown that appropriate regulation of blood gas parameters is essential to avoid the negative outcomes linked to sub-optimal blood gas parameter control. More precise and accurate control of blood gas parameters potentially improves cardiac function, renal function, pulmonary function, cerebral function, transfusion requirements, ventilator requirements, ICU stays and length of post-operative hospital stays.    In this hands on workshop CREF attendees will have the unique opportunity to experience the future of continuous in-line blood gas monitoring technology.

With the support of Terumo Cardiovascular’s team of Clinical Specialists, participants will take a guided tour of the latest hardware system available, and will learn how technological advancements can help lead to improvements in their surgical practice.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14
