Hands-On CREF Workshops

CREF workshops offer experiential education, complementing PowerPoint presentations and small-group discussions, reinforcing concepts and helping participants improve knowledge, skills, and confidence — all in a safe and supportive learning environment. Registered CREF 2019 attendees may attend all of the following hands-on CREF workshops at no extra cost:

The cost to attend each CREF workshop is included in the conference registration fee. Space is limited, so some workshops require pre-registration; others are offered first come, first served. Registered attendees will receive details instructions about how to sign up and attend these CREF workshops.

Participants must be registered for the conference, and guest registrants are not eligible to participate.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9

Protocol Project CREF Workshop

CARDIFF ROOM / THIRD FLOOR
12:00 - 3:15 p.m.

Led by Shahna L. Helmick CCP, this workshop will cover all aspects of protocol creation, beginning with Standard 1 of AmSECT's Standards & Guidelines. Participants will discuss how to create a protocol based on professional standards and guidelines, what important bullet points to include, who needs to approve it, and more. Educational objectives include the following:

  • Learn how policies are developed, updated, and distributed at several centers
  • Study examples of departmental policies
  • Discuss resources being developed by AmSECT 

The workshop is designed for all levels: those who have never written a protocol but wish to develop one, those who have one in place but need help with administrative issues, and everyone in between. Attendees are encouraged to arrive with questions, concerns, and comments.

ECMO Systems CREF Workshop: What's Available Now?

CARLSBAD ROOM / THIRD FLOOR
12:00 - 5:30 p.m.

This hands-on workshop, led by E. Daniel Whitehead MHS CCP, will offer an overview and unbiased evaluation of the leading ECMO systems commercially available in the United States. Whitehead will review the features of these ECMO devices and analyze their benefits and drawbacks. Attendees will have ample time to experiment with each device and interact with workshop participants to discuss their experiences using the various systems.

Biomed Simulation ECLS Workshop: Practice Patient Care Strategies through Simulation

DEL MAR ROOM / THIRD FLOOR

During this hands-on workshop, led by Robin G. Sutton MS CCP CHSE, attendees will manage a patient through pre-ECLS assessment, cannulation, initiation, daily management, high-stakes clinical scenarios, and ECLS weaning strategies. In this high-fidelity, safe, reflective learning environment, attendees can feel, think, and act as they would in a real-life scenario.

Spectrum Medical Quantum Perfusion Safety System Workshop

This workshop will feature hands-on demonstration of the recently FDA-approved Quantum Heart-Lung machine.

The Spectrum Medical Quantum Perfusion System is a new generation of Extracorporeal Technologies and integrated Patient Safety Systems designed for Cardiopulmonary Bypass and ECLS. The Quantum system is totally configurable and extends both Perfusion Management and Perfusion Functionalities well beyond today's conventional technologies. This workshop will afford attendees a hands-on glimpse into the Quantum Perfusion Technology portfolio.
