CREF Workshops

CREF workshops offer experiential education, complementing PowerPoint presentations and small-group discussions, reinforcing concepts and helping participants improve knowledge, skills, and confidence — all in a safe and supportive learning environment. Registered CREF 2021 attendees may attend all of the following hands-on CREF workshops at no extra cost:

  • ECMO 3D Simulation Scenarios
  • New Advances in ECLS Technologies
  • POC Assessment and Restoration of Hemostasis
  • Cannulation Manikin and Simulation
  • ECMO Systems: What's Available Now?
  • Quantum Perfusion: Automation of Initiation and Weaning

The cost to attend each CREF workshop is included in the conference registration fee. Space is limited, so some workshops require pre-registration; others are offered first come, first served. Registered attendees will receive detailed instructions about how to sign up and attend these CREF workshops.

Participants must be registered for the conference, and guest registrants are not eligible to participate.

CEU credits, but not CME credits, are offered for all CREF workshops.

View details below, and contact us if you have questions about any of the following CREF workshops.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22

3D ECMO Workshop
ECLS Simulation: How Gaming Engages Learners

WORKSHOP HOST: BIOMED SIMULATION
CORONADO ROOM | 4TH FLOOR
11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 1:15 – 3:15 p.m.

During this hands-on workshop, led by Robin G. Mauger MS CCP CHSE, attendees will have an opportunity to experience 3D simulation to practice the following:

  1. Incorporate a lung simulator with high-fidelity ECMO simulation
  2. Recognize North-South syndrome in a patient on VA ECMO and experiment with resolution strategies
  3. Use simulation to assess technical and nontechnical ECMO competencies
  4. Perform ECMO troubleshooting and try to predict what could go wrong

Perfusion and ECLS: An Interactive Experience with Our Newest Technology Advances

WORKSHOP HOST: MEDTRONIC
MIRAMAR ROOM | 3RD FLOOR
11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 1:15 – 3:15 p.m.

In this hands-on workshop, attendees will interact with fellow clinicians and Medtronic Engineers to hear about, and give feedback on, our broad pipeline of product development projects.

Optimal POC Assessment and Restoration of Hemostasis in a PBM Context

WORKSHOP HOST: HEMOSONICS
LA COSTA ROOM | 4TH FLOOR
11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 1:15 – 3:15 p.m.

This workshop will give attendees a review of various POC techniques, methodologies, and practices for hemostasis restoration and bleeding management. It will also include a talk from a prominent medical professional(s) in the field, a short section from industry, and a hands-on demonstration portion.

Cannulation Manikin and Simulation Workshop

WORKSHOP HOST: ABBOTT
CATALINA ROOM / 4TH FLOOR
11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 1:15 – 3:15 p.m.

In this hands-on workshop, led by Richard Tallman, Jr., PhD, participants practice cannulation techniques with a cannulation manikin and simulate different case scenarios.

Attendees will explore possible training scenarios and learn how these tools allow ECMO teams to enhance learning and improve the efficiency of initiating and providing support with our circulatory support system in this population.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23

ECMO Systems CREF Workshop: What's Available Now?

WORKSHOP HOST: CREF
CATALINA ROOM | 4TH FLOOR
3:45 – 4:45 p.m. and 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

This hands-on workshop, led by E. Daniel Whitehead MHS CCP, will offer an overview and unbiased evaluation of four leading ECMO systems commercially available in the United States. Whitehead will review the features of these ECMO devices and analyze their benefits and drawbacks. Attendees will have ample time to experiment with each device and interact with workshop participants to discuss their experiences using the various systems.

3D ECMO Workshop
ECLS Simulation: How Gaming Engages Learners

WORKSHOP HOST: BIOMED SIMULATION
CORONADO ROOM | 4TH FLOOR
3:45 – 4:45 p.m. and 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

During this hands-on workshop, led by Robin G. Sutton MS CCP CHSE, attendees will have an opportunity to experience 3D simulation to practice the following:

WORKSHOP SPONSOR: MEDTRONIC
MIRAMAR ROOM | 3RD FLOOR
3:45 – 4:45 p.m. and 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

In this hands-on workshop, attendees will interact with fellow clinicians and Medtronic Engineers to hear about, and give feedback on, our broad pipeline of product development projects.

Quantum Perfusion: Automation of Initiation and Weaning

WORKSHOP SPONSOR: SPECTRUM MEDICAL
MARINA BALLROOM D+E | 3RD FLOOR
3:45 – 4:45 p.m. and 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

This workshop will allow attendees to use the Spectrum Quantum Smart Occluders to simulate the process of initiation and weaning from bypass with the Quantum Perfusion System.
